A train service links San Jose with Puntarenas on the Pacific coast twice daily, and Puerto Limon on the Atlantic coast once daily.
Road
The roads are considered good, but because many are two lane and very winding, it can take much longer to get somewhere than you might think. There are 405 miles of Inter-American Highway linking San Jose with other principal towns. If you're renting a car, it's advised that a 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary for reaching many of the attractions.
There is regular bus service between towns and villages, but they have a tendency to be crowded, and pre-booking is advised. There are many bus tours with bilingual guides and return service from hotels.
